Privacy Policy
Last updated: 5 November 2026
This is my personal academic website. It is a static site: there are no user accounts, no logins for visitors, no comment system, and no contact or subscription form. I do not ask you for personal information anywhere on this site, and nothing you do here is linked to your identity by me.
What follows is a plain description of the data that nonetheless changes hands when you load a page, because some of it is unavoidable and some of it comes from third-party services the site uses.
Server logs
The site is hosted on IONOS Deploy Now. As with any website, loading a page sends your IP address, your browser’s user-agent string, and the address of the page you requested to the server that answers it. My hosting provider handles those requests and may retain standard access logs. I do not have an analytics or logging system of my own beyond what is described below, and I do not inspect raw server logs.
Google Analytics
The site uses Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID G-49CVNZYS0Q), loaded from
www.googletagmanager.com. It records which pages are visited, roughly where in
the world visitors come from, what kind of device and browser they use, and
which outbound links are clicked. It sets cookies in your browser to recognise
repeat visits.
I use this only to see which papers and pages people actually read. I do not attempt to identify individual visitors, and I do not combine this data with anything else or share it with anyone.
Google receives your IP address as part of the request. Google states that Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses, and uses them only to infer approximate location. Google’s own description of how it handles this data is at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
If you would rather not be counted, you can install Google’s opt-out browser add-on, or block the tag with any content blocker. Nothing on the site breaks if you do.
Fonts and other third-party files
To render pages the site loads files from two other services. Each one necessarily receives your IP address and user-agent, because your browser connects to them directly:
- Google Fonts (
fonts.googleapis.com,fonts.gstatic.com) — the typefaces used across the site. - jsDelivr (
cdn.jsdelivr.net) — the icon set used for the academic profile links, and the search library used by the search box.
I have no agreement with either of these providers about visitor data and receive nothing back from them.
Storage on your device
Besides the Google Analytics cookies described above, the site stores a single
value in your browser’s local storage, wcTheme, which records a display
preference. It stays on your device, is not sent anywhere, and is not used to
track you.
The site does not currently show a cookie banner.
Links to other sites
Pages here link out to journals, working-paper series, data repositories, pre-registration records, course sites, and my profiles on other platforms. Once you follow such a link you are on someone else’s site, governed by their privacy policy, not this one.
Changes and contact
I will update this page if what the site does changes, and the date at the top will change with it.
If you have a question about any of this, or you would like to know what, if anything, is held about you, write to me at adb [at] uci [dot] edu.
